I would not necessarily worry about the loss of community organizer jobs as much as the blockage of upgrades and repairs to infrastructure. But most of all as the article mentions they are doing because of a disagreement over making it harder for people to unionize.

Good luck.

[moderator edit: remove politics as best I can]
ONE congressman, John Mica (R-FL) who chairs the House committee has made it his goal to have a rider in the FUNDING legislation that will restrict the rights of airline and rail employees to have union representation.
It has NOTHING to do with budgets. Because of his shenanigans, the FAA has been living on temporary authorizations since 2007. Over 21 different ones that should never have happened. There SHOULD have been a clean funding authorization.
Over 200 million a week in uncollected fees and taxes because of this...yeah, that's gonna help.

The difference is 1. the FAA is as efficient as the DMV on quaalude and 2. as friendly as a pit bull. If this were an airline the sympathy would be much higher based on the sheer facts of 1&2 alone. Also the majority of the airline people have spent time on the ropes whereas the FAA puts people on the ropes.
Also what airline could put 4,000 people on the street yet still operate? That is an awful lot of NON ESSENTIAL personnell.

While it stinks that they are being laid off (for the time being...), the fact is that the government is wayyyy over bloated. Would you be saying the same if all the waste that is the IRS got streamlined?

I hope those morons in Oklahoma City are the first to go. Service at the BMV is like a 5 star Hilton compared to the FAA's medical division.

However, we take in about 2.5 trillion in revenues every year. 2.5 TRILLION!! And I take home less than 50% of my gross earnings. But 2.5 TRILLION isn't enough, because our government spends 4 TRILLION every year. That leaves us needing to borrow over 1.5 TRILLION every year in order to not default.
The FAA is just one government bureaucracy that will need to be drastically cut if there is any hope to stop borrowing 1.5 TRILLION every year. If we don't make these decisions, they WILL be made for us. The world market will make these decisions for us one day very soon. Argentina and Greece, etc will show you what that looks like when it happens.

So when you "win win" guys can't get the approach lights turned or the ILS is out and you have to divert who are you going blame? Hope it's not the furloughed bloated government employees....

I am not so sure the current oversight is actually very good to begin with. The PBS documentary on the misdeeds of the outsourced maintenance facilities in Mobile, China and Latin America opened a few eyes. Doesn't appear the FAA really seems to care about proper maintenance or oversight. So what exactly will change with the shutdown, no one around to turn a blind eye to the miscreants?
Should we even discuss the oversight of Valujet and various other companies that were proven unsafe AFTER accidents! Sure the FAA is here to help.

Are you saying it will be a free for all starting with the shutdown?

Lawyer:"State your title...
Fed:"Airworthiness Inspector-Avionics".
Lawyer:"Are you an A&P ?"
Fed:"No.."
Lawyer:"Are you an IA ?"
Fed:"No..."
Lawyer:"So what qualifies you to hold this position ?"
Fed:"Well,I've worked with some great mechanics..."
Lawyer:"So,you're an expert by association ?"
It goes downhill from there. The feds revoked a 135 certificate (Aerotrek) based on moronic crap like this.Aerotrek sued the feds and won !
