The physical explanation is wrapped up in quantum mechanics. I never took quantum physics so I really can't quite sum it up other than to say the interaction of spinning electrons within a molecule can set up a repulsion which goes way beyond the typical dipole interaction in strength. You will have to know some linear algebra to get it and that pretty much limits the topic to science scholars. I had linear algebra and I kind of get it, but explaining it is impossible without the math and it's all here if you want to try.

I don't know about being smarter; my CFI always said I couldn't land a C-172 for ****.

That is really funny! I just read a thesis for a human factors study conducted about 10 years ago that analyzed performance from pilots (as students in a few different universities that have flight and non flight programs) in comparison to other majors and proved them to have higher GPA's and attendance then there fellow non pilot counterparts. Maybe pilots have gotten dumber over the last 10 years, I know I have!!

I have an unsubstantiated hypothesis on exactly that - I maintain top people aren't being attracted to this career in the numbers they once were because of the cesspool it's turned into.
