Comments.
I think what was reported in a local newspaper vs. the reality of challenges facing that program could be two different things. I'd never trust the local beat reporter to get it right.

That said, that's a great offhand comment to throw out to rally public support to kill a program while maintaining the ability to claim the reporter got it wrong. Well played!

Not specific to this school, but in general, I'm not surprised. As someone who, on a daily basis, reads reports written by regional airline pilots... I am appalled by the inability many of them have to form coherent and legible thoughts, sentences, and statements.

Myth Busted! Recreation Majors have lower average ACT scores (pilots are marginally less stoopid).

“Although the ACT level of incoming students appears to be relatively low, the SER stated that Recreation, Sport and Tourism, and Human and Community Development programs had even lower average applicant ACT scores (24 and 24.8 vs. 25.6). The EPC observed that in fact “that the profile reports the average ACT for all juniors in the department, not admitted freshmen. In other words, the ACT in the profile reflects the strength of the students who end up in the department, not the freshmen admitted to the department. The difference at the Junior level may be attributable to students transferring to other degree programs (e.g., Engineering and Business). The metric provided for student quality, Predicted Grade Point Average, does not address the actual performance of students once they arrive, or take into account their successful placement rate and prominence in their professions. Furthermore, the PGPA is not adjusted for those IA students who ultimately complete the Pilot Certification program rather than Aviation Human Factors.”

You have no idea. I receive many email requests from people who initially I'm sure live outside the US with English as a (distant) 3rd language....and then they turn out to be college aviation students. Is this what post-secondary education has become?
