I just don't think that we need to do the young eagles program. Have an airport day. Let the kids play with the planes on the ground. Hire a flight instructor in a plane with a 100 hour inspection to take a few up but don't hold out to the public with what passes for a pilot in the EAA. I have flown with those guys. I know how current they are.
We are talking about the well being of strangers kids after all. Imagine being personally forced to sit in the back with your hands bound with one of them at the controls. Not a good idea. One day a Cessna 172 full of kids is going to make national news.

School Bus?
School buses are a fairly safe form of transportation that are driven by professional drivers who drive the same route everyday. The buses are maintained by professional mechanics to a high standard. In addition it is a necessary risk to get our kids educated. The YE program is not even a close comparison to a school bus. YE pilots are loosely verified. Their planes often are self maintained and infrequently flown. I have been involved with the YE program in the past and witnessed several near disasters.
It is alright to put an adult at risk who goes into the venture with the skills to assess the situation for themselves, but not alright for kids. The EAA is holding this service out to the public and with that comes some inherent responsibilities that go beyond the FAA requirements of a simple plane ride.
The non-aviation public is coming to these events assuming that everyone who is at the controls has been blessed by some sort of professional grade of oversight. They do not know the pilots nor do they know of the condition of their planes. It is natural for them to assume that this carnival ride has the same level of safeguards that any public attraction would have when in reality it does not.
It is a bad idea that will end in a disaster one day.

There you go applying your own personal observations to such a small group (the people that you know) compared to a wide ranging program - WORLDWIDE! Your own exaggerations knows no bounds does it?

Again - the original questions was about programs that introduce the general population to aviation and the initial impresion left. Sky wants to use it as a springboard for his rants against one particular organization that he feels is dangerous.

What exactly are the qualifications for a school bus driver where you are from? When my roommate was a bus driver I think it was a weekend ground school, followed by driving around the bus once or twice, and then having a CPL test. Yep....HIGHLY trained your right.

Since 1992, more than 1.6 million Young Eagles have enjoyed a flight through the program. Young Eagles have been registered in more than 90 different countries and have been flown by more than 42,000 volunteer pilots.

A few things:
1) Mankind has dreamed of flying for centuries. Stories of flight have gone back as far as the ancient Greeks with the legends of Kid Icarus and the white winged horse. I'm sure they go back further but I'm no Anthropologist.
2) Flight became possible for the first time in the early 20th century due to the devotion and sacrifice of some of the boldest and bravest men and women in the history of the planet. Within a matter of 52 years, flight was taken from crude, dangerous aircraft to the Apollo 11 space shuttle that made the first lunar landing.
3) After the first 100 years of flight, it is now the safest form of travel and one that has opened up the world to millions of middle class travelers.
4) This is a young industry that has made extraordinary advances in a very short time period. The skies are safer and more open than they have ever been and will only become more accessible thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of many many hard working and devoted professionals. Make it better and encourage the next generation to participate.
