Race For A Soldier - Gig Harbor Half Marathon
I just had lunch at the Tides Tavern in Gig Harbor, WA and met an amazing lady, Leslie Mayne.
Leslie, lost her son Kyle, an Army SF soldier, to suicide while he was receiving post-deployment treatment for a Traumatic Brain Injury, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Through her tragedy, she has poured herself into helping others affected by TBI and PTSD and raising public awareness. Leslie's courage has been an inspiration to the entire community and her philosophy is that P.T.S.D. should forever stand for Permission To Start Dreaming.
To raise awareness and punctuate the need for community involvement, Leslie has organized Race for a Soldier half marathon in Gig Harbor. There has been groundswell of local support with this event, but the long term goal is to have every city where there is a military base host this annual event.
The first event is October 16, 2011, more details are on the website at Race For A Soldier | Race for a Soldier
If you're a runner please come out and run! If you're not a runner, please show up and support the event! I hope everyone will take a moment and learn more about helping our returning veterans as they re-integrate and re-adapt to everyday life.
Oh, and next time you're at the Tides, look for Leslie, she just might be your server.
