Default Why become a pilot?

Why become a pilot when you just have to graduate high school to get a job with the USPS? Great retirement/benefits. Never work another holiday.... It just keeps getting better.

I dont think you will ever make over 100k a year as a Mail Carrier with only a high school diploma, nor will you be able to fly all over the world first class for next to nothing. Once you get senior enough you can get your holidays and weekends too.

People need to stop downplaying this industry. Sure the pay at the lowest level sucks but even a regional captain will break 100k eventually, unless of course you work for GLA or something like that.

Simple answer: I want to.
Complex answer: I don't want to be a mail carrier.

Whew... that was difficult to summarize.

Okay, then quit and go. Enjoy selling stamps and being lazy. Why are you ruining for every one else?

I'm sure that you could still change jobs if you are unhappy with being a CRJ CA and truly entrapped with the USPS.

I am sure that it is a GREAT job for some; while others may have different aspirations. The great thing though is that you have a choice.

I see what you're saying, I've been non-reving in one form or another all over the world now for 11 years. Using pass travel on 3 U.S. legacy airlines and 2 foreign.

But with the increasing prices that airlines are charging their employees for the "benefit", as well as (de)volving upgrade policies on some airlines to include int'l, I'd hardly call it "next to nothing" anymore.

Is it cheaper than the what the average passenger pays? Sure, no doubt about it. But like I said, "first class for next to nothing" is overstating it.

Pretty sure the USPS is in some pretty dire financial straights. Seems like if you took a job there, you'd be getting laid off in the next few years.

I guess the only way to make it not as bad is to say eventually the airline job will turn out better than the USPS. That "eventually" factors in on quite a bit of luck and timing happening on the part of the fresh FO.

Honest to heaven my mailman frequently asks me what all the aviation mail I get is whenever he delivers it. You would think this kind of question is off limits for mail deliverers and maybe it is, but he goes on and on about how he is going to get his private pilot license and what a great thing aviation is. Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness comes to mind. I feel kind of mean not telling him how much aviation has meant to me over the years, it is kind of an individual journey for most.
