Why become a pilot?

I agree with flyfish if you have to ask dont do it. Its a passion and something that you love to do then its not gonna feel like a job. Most of the people hired in the last 10 years knew what they was getting into. So if you knew all of this why complain about after working for a couple of years. Its terriable to hear the way people talk about it like its one of the worst jobs. Suck it up or find something else.
Fact is that there are less educated better paid people doing less work than us. It doesn't mean i don't like doing what i am doing. It means that we are underpaid and overworked compared to other industries. I have been sucking it up for 12 years. If everyone had to instruct to 1500hrs then 135 it for 2000hrs plus then finally get to a 121 job they wouldn't be saying "You knew what you were getting so suck it up". They would be screaming at the top of their lungs how unjust this industry has become. And we can go on and on blaming upper management about the situation but it boils down to our fellow brothers sticking it to us.
This isn't the worst job in the world, but it sure is one of the most underpaid.

I would prefer to compare to something more fun like- Trash man. Post office will be gone soon but we will always need someone to pick up the trash.
Tell your friends; man best job ever, I drive a truck and just push buttons all day! Whoo hoo

Post office is here to stay
The post office is here to stay. It is mandated in the constitution as one of the essential services of the government. In comparison most airlines in the sky today will not be here 20 years from now.
I think that the point is that kids do not dream of becoming mailmen, as such they have more control over their lives than pilots do. A mailman has little invested into their career. They can walk at will.
A pilot however has college, flight training and often decades of experience that is near useless to the outside world. As such we are forced to accept whatever management wants to shove down our throats.
In summary a pilot is paid in sunsets and landings while the mailman is compensated with cash and benefits, because who would do that job unless they are being well paid for it?
When examining a career from the financial perspective the mailman is the way to go. It is far better to earn 54K for 25 unbroken years than the thin promise of making it to 100K as a pilot after surviving countless moves, furloughs, layoffs, shutdowns, ect.... You know the drill.
Skyhigh
The pilot starts 300K in the hole for college and flight training.
