Default 'jumpseating' flight attendants

Are flight attendants who catch a ride in the back of another airline's airplane not required to ask the Captain for a ride? Do flight attendants have some sort of other etiquette? Though I seldom see it, it bothers me when a pilot shoots right to the back without checking in up front first (and ASKING for a ride, not stating that you will be riding) but I've seemingly never seen a flight attendant do anything like this. What is the protocal here?

There is none on most airlines. jetBlue is the notable exception.
