shfo, you are correct.
they got faa approval to have the captain fill in the corrective action block (mel the item) and not have maintenance look at until the category time approached expiration.
I am trying to squeeze our union into doing something and wanted to know who else does this.

Used to work at a supplemental carrier that had a procedure for "O" items or things that just required a circuit breaker to be pulled. Had a column in the MEL for "Crew Placardable Item." But everything was written in the defect side. You'd have a write up, "APU will not start." You'd call maintenance control, get a DMI number, and then in the same block as the write up add "Continuing per MEL 49-1, DMI 1234, Cat C." And the crew filled out a DMI sticker and stuck it near whatever. You were flying around with an open write up as there was nothing in the corrective action side. But then as soon as you got somewhere with Maintenance they cleaned it up and put it in the DMI log.
