Apparently enough folks were trained (incorrectly) to do it, that the FAA felt the need to specifically address it in the Aeronautical Information Manual :

That makes it pretty easy for me.

It is new for the '06 AIM. The '05 AIM that I keep by my desk for quick reference doesn't have it, but the '06 in the pilot bag does.
Edit: It is an '07 addition to the AIM. I have an '07 not an '06

And when you ask for the other traffic to "please advise," the one plane that won't advise is the one with no radio or the one with the pilot not paying attention to the radio. More reason to be looking out and less relying on the radio for traffic.
The other radio call that I don't understand why people make is the "stuck mike" call. Pretty much everyone on the frequency can tell when there is a stuck mike. The only plane who cannot hear the "stuck mike" call is the one with the stuck mike.

I have always thought that it was one of the dumbest things I had heard on the radio.
I am of the mind that students should be taught to listen to the radio to gain situational awareness. If someone is calling inbound to the airport and you are near or have a potential conflict with then by all means speak up and let them you are there and what you are doing.
To me it is implied that when the initial position report is made, anyone in the pattern or in the vicinity should speak up.
Something else that I find irritating is annoucing everthing while in the pattern. Please, just downwind and final.
There is way to much jabbering on the radio.

while I agree that saying is annoying, doesnt the AIM address that as a valid position report meaning, you cant just say that and that be your position report, so you have to state your location and intentions. So the whole traffic call wouldnt necessarily be wrong but extra crap that doesnt need to be said.
I could be wrong, I most likely am. That just how I read that statement to say

The AIM addresses it, and it does NOT call it a valid position report.
Did you read Post #3 above?

I take that to read, not to be used under any circumstances AS a position report.
Yeah read what you said, but I guess I implied something different. Damn must be my airforce training, some of our sh!t can be read so many different ways. So yeah I would agree, that its a dumb statement. The unfortunate thing is that alot people say really dumb things on the radio.

I agree that the "any traffic please advise" is kinda useless, unless, I've already heard the guy at the airport I'm approaching. Then, I'd rather ask that just to make sure he heard me.
Also, I'm in a Lear and the time it takes you in a cessna or piper to go from one end of downwind to the other, I'm going from 35 miles out to base leg intercept. I'd much rather establish 2 way communication with you in the pattern of an uncontrolled airport, then run you over, because I assumed you heard me and I couldn't find you in the pattern on my way in.
