Relocating to MSP
Hey all,
My fiancee and I are moving out to MSP to be closer to family and to eliminate my commute. Neither of us have spent much time back there, so we're looking for a little input. We would like to live in an urban area near public transit to the airport. Both downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul seem pretty nice from the limited time we've spent in each. What are the main differences between them? How about suburbs? Are there any nice ones with relatively easy access to public transit to the airport? We're pretty laid back, we like wine bars and dive bars equally. Not too huge into the club scene. Just looking for a nice place, nothing too crazy, with urban amenities.
Thanks for the input!

I lived in West St. Paul for 2 years. It's a nice area and only 9 minutes to the airport. It's not close to the light rail but right next to the highway, never an issue with traffic going to and from the airport. We rented at the time and cost of living was not bad since how close we were to the airport.

It's changed a little bit in the last few years but St. Paul has always been known for rolling up the sidewalks at 6pm. There actually are a lot of interesting places now but not like Minneapolis, and it will take a little longer to find them. Pretty sure you'll find a lot of affordable housing in average-to-nice neighborhoods in St. Paul that are barely a 10 min. drive or 20 min. bus ride to MSP.
The area between downtown Minneapolis and the airport does have rail service, beats the heck out of riding the bus but real estate is probably more divided between full-size single family homes ($$) and apartments. Depends a lot on how picky you are about the neighborhood.
There is no direct bus service from any of the suburbs to the airport, transfer at the Mall of America isn't too bad but will add 10-15 min. to the average trip.
