Not really sure what you mean by "marketed". Funny, I've flown with many females who didn't have parents/family involved in aviation in any way, shape, or form. And that fact is not at all gender discriminate. As others pointed out, the tagline that "many just never thought it was an option" simply doesn't carry weight anymore.

Well I'm a female. And I'm a pilot. So I can only speak from my experience growing up. That aviation, had it not been introduced to me by family, might not have ever crossed my mind. I don't doubt that there women who fly, who came to this profession with no family history of it. Nor do I think that more females aren't pilots due to some sort of discrimination. I have many girlfriends who don't fly and they always say, 'wow I would have never thought to do that'.

Again, just my experience.

Again, that's not at all gender specific. I've flown with plenty of dudes that thought flying "never crossed their mind". But by some unexpected circumstance, that changed. Bruce Dickinson is a perfect example. Although he did have family in the R.A.F., it wasn't till his drummer introduced him to it that he decided flying was for him.

Rick defined it. But in this day and age, if they have that sentiment, it's because of the standard genetic "programming" of what males gravitate towards vs. females. Or their own preconceived notion that "it wasn't an option".

Flying was "introduced" to me by watching birds and airplanes. As a kid, I knew I wanted to either fly or be a railroad engineer (I only wish I had chosen the latter, their union and contracts are VASTLY better).

Funny, the railroad guy I know thinks it's quite the opposite. He says they all wish they had become pilots Well you now what they say about the grass on the other side of the fence...
