Default Just a Thought

In my experience I find that many female pilots come with a family history of aviation. I know that this was the case for a good number of my female students. They usually had a close family member who was involved in some aspect of aviation and showed it to them when they were young.

I know this was the case for me as well. My grandfather flew for Pan-am, both my uncles flew USAir and my dad is a CFII,MEI. One of my first memories is plane-spotting with my dad at KMHT and learning to tell the different airplanes apart. If I hadn't had a family history of aviation, I probably would have been a veterinarian.

I think many people have hit the nail on the head- there aren't more women airline pilots because they choose to do something else. I also think that many women simply don't know that aviation is a viable career path.

I know it may sound weird but sometimes it simply comes down to a personal choice to forgo the glamorous life that is the airline pilot and just do something else.

I asked if I could trade places with her and she told me 'NO!'
In the late 1980's UAL tried to increase their diversity of pilots but could not get past the historical 5% of women pilots. They determined that most women pilots quit the profession at 28. In response to this discovery they tried to hire women pilots as young as possible regardless of their experience level in attempt to increase their percentages.

I was a Sophomore in college when the only female in the entire aviation program was pulled out of class to receive a job offer from UAL in the hallway. They had an impending class date that needed another female in it. We finished the quarter of aerodynamics while she was getting ready to fly the line.

Women quit flying early because they value the important things in life like family and friend connections. A male however would give up all that stuff for a lonely life, a bed bug ridden hotel room and a 05:00AM show time.

Sky, please, just for once, put down that poison pen of yours and admit that there are some great things to say about a career in Aviation! When you gamble, as you may well do in this field, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. Positive and negative. Can you say anything positive or is that not possible with your one sided thinking?

Why are you not on some home building forum pining about the evils of being a home builder or being in the construction field.

Default Get into it?

I don't think you guys really want an answer to those questions. At least not here, so I shall resist for the sake of the thread.

I remember that because my cousin was a C-130 pilot in the coast guard and was ready to get out and UAL wouldn't give him the time of day even though he had thousands of hours turbine PIC hard search and rescue flying in Alaska and a graduate of the Coast Guard Academy but they were hiring miniorites women and others with a couple hundred hours and some not even turbine time and putting them sideways in a DC-10 or 727 I think it might have been a result of some consent decree but am not sure. He got hired at Alaska anyway but still I have problems with very qualified people being passed over to reach some company diversity goal and lowering the standards to do it.

C'mon now. It's better to have a rainbow of people than having the most qualified people.
But, at least it gives me, a 5' 10" white boy the chance to play in the NBA.

ooops, maybe not.

For the record, I don;t care who is sitting next to me, male, female, black, white, brown, yellow, or green, as long as they can do their job.

I may not like your music, but I can still respect you as a pilot.

Not many women are pilots, or rocket scientists, because they don't want to be.

Not many men are pre-school teachers, or maids, because they don't want to be.

I think that everyone should be free to take any occupation that they can do. I do not think that anyone should be discouraged from an occupation.

Nice one Brian.
