It cracks me up that most everybody talks about this lifestyle not being conducive to women. What about men? I got a wife, kids, and a home. Is it conducive to me?

Sounds like a question that you have to answer for yourself.
Is it? And if not - why are you hanging on?

Colganguy and USMCFLYR ask some great questions about our profession.

I'm preparing to get flamed for this, but I really don't understand why people are so concerned about why there are so few of "(insert group here)" in "(insert career here"). Anyone has the opportunity to become a pilot (provided they can meet established criteria such as obtaining a medical) if they so choose to.

I just don't think of women pilots as 'women pilots'. They're just 'pilots' to me.

Exactly LostInPA.
Some people/groups just NEED to make distinctions, even while they are trying to not be noticed or treated differently. It is a Catch22.

The simple answer that no one likes to hear: Most of them are not good at it.

I use to have an optimistic personality that just about anybody can become an airline pilot if they try hard enough.

Keyword there is try.

I worked with female students in the past as an instructor. They are usually my most weakest students. I say weak, because they don't take initiative. They expect others to make a decision for them. And most of all they usually lack confidence in themselves.

There are certain qualties that most pilots usually have and it serves them well. Confidence and Independence. These two qualities are hard to cultivate in women pilots for reasons I don't know.

Other than that I have met women pilots that are good at what they do, there's just not that many of them.

Probably because if you want to get into aviation as a female, that means spending a buncha time at either a FBO with a bunch of 40-50+ year old potentially divorced poor hygiene males or at a "flight academy" with a bunch of horny young 20-something boys.

Look at how many of the 40-50 year old pilot crowd goes goo-goo over Ariel Tweeto on Flying Wild Alaska. They love her, never mind the fact that she can't fly (see show for multiple examples of her ADD) and is dumb as a rock.

Give it another 5-10 years and things will probably be different...

I wasn't aware that working at an FBO, being divorced or being 40-50 years old causes poor hygiene?

Of which I only qualify for the 40-50 year old portion of your comment. But I will immediately check my hygiene just in case.

Now I will say this. I was a 777 instructor at UAL for almost 7 years and the above comment on women pilots not being very good is so far off the base that it didn't qualify for a proper response from me. Anytime I ever hear somebody making a blanket statement about this group or that group are lousy pilots my immediate thought is "what's this guys problem?"

Weak pilots are generally the ones trying to disparage and group other pilots. The same ones BTW who are nervous Nellies and control freaks.

When I finish closing up my coffee shop business, and before I fall into the "nothing to do bum" pit, I'm gonna go back to flying and see if I can get a job at FedEx flying those shiny 777 to Hong Kong!

Then y'all will see how you like flying with an old bag with a few loose screws and in need of a new zipper. http://www.airlinepilotforums.com/ha...epair-phx.html
