Maybe you can take a "more qualified" (by AF standards) pilot with you while you build up your time to qualify?
There are several other groups for which you can fly so don't give up looking for one in your area. It is a good cause, and as someone else said, YOU will feel really great giving back. Good luck.

Update:
Well I finally got onboard with Angel Flight. Now I am just waiting for a flight that comes up that will work with my A/C. I would have thought there would be many more flights in my (ORF) area but it seems most of them are north of us.
