Yeah, 100 times more powerful than the quake that hit Haiti. It looks like the Tsunami is going to cause more damage than the shaking though.

I have a check ride tomorrow. I got out of the sim around midnight, came back to the room and turned on the tube and this was unfolding.

Now I can't sleep. Absolutely horrific. This just shows you how small and insignificant man is.

Why no airplanes left in the airport? I take it they usually try to get them up in the air as soon as possible after the quake, before the tsunami hits.

i'm out on one of the islands in the pacific that had a tsunami warning. when i left saipan, Delta cancelled one of its flights because Narita closed due to damage. i'm not sure how substantial the damage is, but the plane was still sitting at the gate this morning. not sure when they'll be able to start taking flights in and out of tokyo...

jaws hit the floor when we watched the tsunami take out villages....absolute madness.

I actually landed in NRT just prior to the quake hitting. We were stranded on the taxiway while they evacuated the terminal and control tower. After 8 hours we were finally able to deplane the aircraft. There is very minimal damage to the airport. Mainly just ceiling tiles and lights. Flights are back to normal now.
