Laptop Netbook or Ipad?
#11
Bumping this thread back to the top. I am looking to purchase either a new laptop or an ipad in the future, and this thread has some real potential for being a help in deciding. I am primarily a web surfer, netflix watcher, use the device for checking facebook, email, wx/filing flt plans (pt 91 corporate), that kind of stuff. I RARELY ever need to type anything of any length, or do any work in Office-type software. I have a home desktop PC that would be my primary either way, and, like has previously been mentioned, hotel business centers and FBOs almost always have a public-use PC available should the need arise. I am leaning heavily towards the ipad, but just wanted to rekindle the discussion here to get more opinions.

I too am entering the 21st century soon and I'm buying a friends used iPad with ForeFlight. I've flown with a couple of guys that use it and swear by it for the reasons you mentioned above. There was a good thread recently about flight planning iPhone/iPad apps. that might be worth searching for you.

iPad is awesome for surfing except for the flash limitation. Netflix works great on it too. It's easy to type on & you have apps out the wazoo. I also have a small Sony vaio that is the size if the iPad and has about 7 hrs battery life. The iPad is priceless though with it's instant on!

Two questions for IPAD users.
For International guys...any problems or workarounds for Netflix viewing oversees?
For FedEx guys...Any way to remotely access your computer at home?--am thinking of a workaround for BIDX until PH gets an App developed and approved?

As with most of us....I travel with 30 pounds of gadgets and a change of sox. TSA screeners always look at me funny but I just shrug. Havent had to give any of em a dog and pony show, yet. But if they wanna see it work, I'll show em.
If you need to maniluplate documents/spreadsheets/ etc....netbook or tablet pc.
If you are looking for entertainment and browsing. ipad.
If you have never seen ForeFlight in action...find someone with it...play with it for an hour (foreflight). You'll never look back.
I'll spare you my eye opening experience. Check it out for yourself. You dont need an iPad 2. Save some $ and get a 1st gen off craigslist.
Also EXTREMELY handy is LogMeIn.com
Whatever you get, protect it with SquareTrade.com warranty. I never worry about my gear.
No, I am not affiliate in any way with any of these outfits. But I do know what works.

I have an iPad I use for almost everything. I have a laptop and desktop at home for the stuff the iPad won't do. The iPad is a great cockpit companion as there are several aviation apps, and it's great for entertainment when not in the cockpit. Just realize that the iPad won't do everything a laptop can.

Get yourself a HDMI adapter and watch Netflix on the tv at the hotel, it works very well.
I would guess I use the iPad for about 90% of the work I do on the road, docs to go is a great addition for light office work.
