I didn't do it, but presumably somebody thought the idea so unlikely that it didn't belong in the "serious" forums.

I'm pretty sure there's no possible way it would happen. You could make a case that with people living healthier lives and better medical care that age 65 was reasonable (especially since age 60 was arbitrary in the first place).

But at some point people do wear out, and most 70 year olds do not belong in airline cockpits. Even if you went to the great expense of more sophisticated and frequent medical testing, the statistical risk of sudden incapacitation starts to get too close to home. Also while a 69 year old might be able to pass a medical, sim, cognitive, and dexterity tests as well as a 50 YO, after 12 hours duty flying the back side, the older guy is going to degrade a lot more.

haven't we learned so many things could happen between now and a so called "pilot shortage". I'll believe it when majors are paying people to go threw flight school

It'll be like the Luftwaffe: Fly 'til you die.

Seriously gentlemen, enough is enough. The Government and Airlines lack of planning should not constitute a compromise of safety with 65+ year old human beings piloting commercial aircraft. We need to make all of our voices heard if this comes to fruition. This is simply unacceptable.
Hey, if the fed's want to raise the retirement age to 68 for SSN benefits, why not increase all mandatory retirement ages the same amount. The new age to retire for 121 pilots will now be 68. Sound reasonable?

At some point increased pilot retirement age would trigger more sophisticated and invasive medical exams. As others have pointed out many times, these exams would be very expensive, paid for by us, and probably not limited to old guys.

I doubt the airlines want to go there either, if a first class medical (with EKG, full blood panel, treadmill, MRI, and cognitive analysis) cost $4000 they know that they would end up having to pay for it one way or another...probably for all pilots over 50 or something like that. Also they would likely lose more young pilots to such an exam than they would gain by keeping a few old guys.

Actually here's a MORE reasonable idea:

If the govenment mandates you retire at a given age, your Social Security and Medicare benefits begin the day after your mandated retirement birthday.

You hit this nail right on the head! People need to be careful what they wish for.

Several years ago Europe started an Age 70 committe.

Recently the highest court in the EU ruled for a worker who was laid off due to age. The worker won, and it sounds like age limits for workers will be rescinded.

Two Air Canada pilots sued and won after being laid off at age 65 and were re-instated.

This is lunacy, and eventually people will realize it. It might take a few major incidents...
