Valid point, I hereby stand corrected and state that "most" is not accurate. Should have said something like, "the 10 top airlines (in revenue) in the US"
Here is what current company FOM states, last airline worked at was similiarly stated. When asked to see others, some legacies/national was also similiarly worded. (Was doing contract/FOM comparisons)
YMMV

PERSONAL APPEARANCE
Female crewmembers must keep a conservative hairstyle. Hair extending below your collar must be worn close to your head in a braid, bun, or ponytail. Your hair must not interfere with your headset, oxygen mask, or uniform hat. Your hair accessories must be conservative. Any makeup or finger nail polish you wear must create a conservative, business-like
appearance. Visible jewelry is limited to a wristwatch, a bracelet and one ring or wedding set on each hand. Do not wear multiple ring bracelets. You may wear small, conservative earrings.

Male crewmember’s hair must be neatly cut and must be kept above the collar. Your hair should not be bushy or extend from the head beyond the distance from the head to the outermost tip of the ears. Do not allow sideburns to extend below the middle of the ear. Cut sideburns straight so they do not extend into the cheek area. Do not wear beards or goatees. Mustaches are allowed, but they must be neat and clean in appearance and they may not extend below the corner of the mouth.
NOTE: Beard waivers may be granted by the Chief Pilot for certain medical conditions.
Chief Pilot may grant a waiver to current policy. This “no shaving”
waiver requires the crewmember to maintain neatly trimmed (1/4 inch maximum) beard.
Manicured beards (e.g., Fu Manchu’s, goatees, etc.) are not allowed.

You took a different approach.
I would have asked that FOMs be presented that DID NOT required grooming standards as you mentioned!
You should have known better than to use words like *most*, always, never, all, etc....

Being bald, with a moustache and no beard, I'd say, for those of you who have hair:

up off the ears
moustache trimmed to corners of the mouth
sideburns to middle of ear
tapered in the back and sides

Basically military style. It professional and presentable.

Default Real Professionalism

1. I'm sure the ex future skipper of the Enterprise had a haircut you could set your watch by, but his conduct was clearly unprofessional.

2. Short hair in the military is a requirement because it is hygienic in the field. The "military look" is secondary and does not make one more professional.

3. It is possible to look neat, clean, and trustworthy with longer hair in the 21st Century just as it is possible to appear disheveled with short hair.

4. I've never read excessive hair length as being a causal factor.

5 Flame On.

Not to those of us that were there at the time. Just some 18 year old that turned it over to the media 4 years later, to distort as they saw fit. Totally out of context, he was thrown under the bus. But I digress....

Until you're name is at the bottom of your paycheck, your hair cut should meet the standards set forth by your employer. Questions?

Hair length has nothing to do with capability. Professionals follow certain conventions, that is part of a professional stature and nature. If the employers all wanted long hair, would have a ponytail to my ankles, but they don't. So all else is superfluous. OP wanted to know if professional or not. Answer: Doesn't matter what the individual thinks. It is up to the employer. Just like tats, can have them too, but if visible, on the neck etc, don't expect a job flying a load of folks. Just the way it is.
