So. Cal Mystery Missile (11/08)
Mystery missile caught on video off L.A. coast - U.S. news - Security - msnbc.com
Hmmm..... Either an EPIC mistake or?
And yeah, I left out the second "i" in "Missile". Halfway through the first coffee...
From MSNBC.com
LOS ANGELES — U.S. officials said Tuesday they had no clue who could have launched the mysterious "missile" that streaked across the sky off the Southern California coast Monday night, but they said the U.S. military didn't appear to have been responsible and that they didn't think there was any threat to the United States.
Los Angeles TV station KCBS, whose traffic helicopter captured the device on video, said the missile was spotted 35 miles out to sea north of Catalina Island on Monday evening.
The Defense Department stressed that it didn't appear to be a military missile and said it wasn't alarmed. The North American Aerospace Defense Command, the joint U.S. -Canadian agency that monitors the skies for possible air attacks, similarly said, "There is no indication of any threat to our nation."
But both agencies acknowledged that they had no idea who launched the missile.
Marine Col. Dave Lapan said the Pentagon was talking to the Federal Aviation Administration and other government agencies that could track who launched this missile. But "so far, we've come up empty with any explanation," he said.
Other government officials told NBC News it was possible the missile was a commercial launch or even an amateur device.

First things first. What is the airspace where the missile was launched? Is there a restricted area there? If so, then it is most likely ours and the military is playing dumb as usual.
However, if there is not restricted airspace there, is there anyone smart enough to research NOTAMs looking for anything mentioning military activity in this area? Specifically, you would be looking for an ALTRV or series of coordinates designating a restricted area.
If this was a planned military event, there would be NOTAMs. The military can not shoot a missile through the air without telling people. Otherwise, they could hit someone.
If it is neither charted or NOTAMed airspace, then it was ours.
Perhaps someone was sending a polite message about the US devaluing the dollar?

LA/Coastal "Missile" sighting (Mon 11/08)
Was anyone up flying in the LA area around 5pm on Monday (11/08), and happen to see this live along the coast?? The FAA & Military have "no explanation" as of yet....strange.

soooo, I don't want to be a killjoy, but I have a few questions about the video
For those who have more experince observing missiles (my experience is a bit lacking for anything bigger than an Estes and smaller than the Shuttle), if you had to guess:
how far away from the camera is the missile?
what altitude?
how large?
fuel type?

NBC military expert said it was an optical illusion - probably a large airliner. The speed and turn in the flight path were just too slow for a missile.
I've seen the guy on several military/history programs, so I have reason to doubt him. On the other hand, I'm getting a new tin foil helmet fitted.

When the camera zooms in, you can see the lights. It is an airplane flying towards the observer/camera so the contrail appears to make an arc pattern from the observers point of view, but is in fact flying straight and level to the horizon.
