Males Prefer Virgins
Male wasp spiders, that is.
The article says that the male has 2 pedipalps and the female has 2 genital ducts. During sex, the male will intentionally snap off one of his things inside the female basically to plug her up. This implies that he still has one useable pedipalp, and if he's lucky to survive this one act, he has a chance to come back and mate again.
My question is, given that his chance of mating only once before being turned into a romantic dinner is 70%, why he does not drop both his bombs at the same time. What possible evolutionary reason is there for this? Or is it a mathematical/chance analysis?
