UAL Hero - fighting cancer
CHICAGO —
A United Airlines pilot who was hailed as a hero for his actions during a deadly crash 21 years ago is waging a new survival fight.
Denny Fitch was aboard United Flight 232 when it lost power July 19, 1989. He grabbed the throttles and helped pilot Al Haynes crash-land in Sioux City, Iowa. Fitch, who was injured, was among the 184 of the 296 people on board who survived.
Fitch learned he had brain cancer in January. He's being treated at Chicago's Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Fitch is working to raise brain cancer awareness and addressed a recent benefit for Northwestern's Brain Tumor Institute.
Oncologist Ann Mellott says Fitch has lived every day since the crash like it could be his last, and is using that positive attitude in his battle against cancer.

My son had a cancerous brain tumor that was found when he was 7 years old. He's 13 now and still in remission. He's not the same little boy he was before the surgery, but he's still here with me and that's the important part. Cancer SUCKS! Good luck to Denny and his family during this battle.
