IMO it would take sustained full auto with .50 caliber or better to even possibly bring down a commercial transport.

An imbalance wouldn't bring the plane down. Birdstrikes happen all the time.

If small arms fire could shoot down airplanes the DoD wouldn't own all those expensive missiles.

Camarillo, California has a shooting range just a few hundred yards from the ATC tower and runway.

Default One round?

Wouldn't one round hitting a fuel tank be enough to put the plane at risk?

Unlikely. At an oblique angle it would probably not penetrate unless it was a heavy round. Even if it did create a leak, it would be small and would only possibly catch fire if it happened to be adjacent to the engine. Jet A is MUCH less flammable than gasoline.

Waco has one next to the perimeter road.

Using a crafty trick of physics, ranges built near airports don't align their impact areas near flight paths or the airport. It is an ideal place for a range, noise complaints tend to be deflected by two sets of lawyers.

The writer of the original article has probably never held a weapon and only presumes they are dangerous in and of themselves when brought into proximity with flowers or children or aircraft-or even just sitting there by their lonesome.

This guy has a point, shooting ranges near airports, have been bringing down planes left and right...

All this article has done is bring more attention to this idea. Thanks to this D-Bag, we may see such an incident, after some whacko reads this and thinks it's a good idea!
