Default Armed men in black...

"San Jose police and airport officials, who were unaware of the armed greeting until questioned by the Mercury News on Sunday, said protocol is for a law enforcement agency to give notice when sending armed personnel into another agency's jurisdiction, according to police Lt. Mike Sullivan."

and TSA didn't respond...

Outgunned?

From the Article......

A parking control officer at the airport asked his supervisor what he should do.

The response, according to one of the volunteers: "Next time that happens, have one of them sit in the car while the other one comes in." The airport prohibits unattended cars at the curb, especially under the current orange alert level.
Indeed.

Livermore lab designs Bombs. If an employee had to travel with information classified at that level, an armed escort is probably a real good idea.

That sort of security operation would not generally notify Barney Fife in advance...you never know who's payroll Barney is on. But I'm not sure why they couldn't have kept it lower profile...dark suits and large concealed handguns vice assault rifles. Maybe they prefer max intimidation over low profile.

If it was just one guy, I question what he was carrying. I've only done a classified carry on a commercial flight and amongst other security measures, one was two person intergrity.

I don't what the rules are for Q clearance but I've done one-man courier ops with DoD classified stuff. Rules probably vary with classification level.

I recall stories about Air Force folks who worked around the silos who transported crypto gear. They had very well armed escorts to defend the crypto gear/keys while in transport (along with special rules about how certain things could never be in a close proximity to each other). They had notices on file with the local state police/sheriff/municipalities that they would not permit any search of the vehicles or their contents due to the sensitive nature.

I guess there were incidents in the past where local barney fife equivalents would hassle the transports and want to peek inside. I could see why I wouldn't want the San Jose PD mucking around with national secrets.

With actual weapons material and command-and-control hardware they get extremely non-tolerant. I'm familiar with those incidents...the occasional small-town sherrif who tries to pull those vehicles over gets taken down by a heavy squad...and then spends about a week on ice while they run a full background check on the guy.
