I must gently disagree. It is moments like the one you describe that remind me of what is truly good in this world....and no, I don't mean Conan's Definition of What is Best in Life (admittedly, in a previous line of work I was not much different than the Cimmerian).

I do not believe full enjoyment of these moments is only achieved by the Zen Masters.

Yes, but even in single pilot, no auto pilot, hand flying there is harmony. We guide the craft, adjust for winds seen and unseen, and ease our vessel to its terminus.

The uneventful flights are the most marvelous. They are unnoticed like a wild flower in the median. Something like the harmony a sculptor has with the marble: he only peels away the waste to show the marvel within. In the end, it is the art that touches people's hearts, not the act.

Weighted down by many other burdens of life, I don't fly anymore, and I haven't had much time to even go to the bathroom let alone the luxury of smelling roses, sleeping in, baking cookies, or thinking of nothing in particular.

Hmmm, but I seem to have a lot of time to log on to APC! Have to live up to my new callsign, you know.

The best part of the pilot gig is the huge amount of time off. Any job can be made better by having to spend less time there.

I agree! My post was somewhat tongue in cheek, with a reference to Top Gun (dogfight review in auditorium scene). Turning off all cockpit lighting (briefly) during a night flight and looking with amazement at the stars and distant cities coupled with the hum of the 200 horses up front is truly unique, calming and puts one at peace.
