Thumbs down California (iPhone) shopping tip

Unless you NEED your new iPhone too badly to wait till you get home, don't buy it in California. They charge tax (9.75%) on the full, undiscounted cost of an iPhone. So that's 9.75% X $699.
Ouch!
They will of course notify you of this after they've activated the new phone and deactivated your old...

Don't live in CA. You can also save the outrageous income taxes that have yielded nothing.

That just the thing. I DON'T live in CA. I happened to be there on a trip. That's why I'm so honked off.

Ahh... to be able to afford an iPhone.. Heck, I'd just love to be able to pay my rent.

Anyway, that is a high tax rate! We have 6.5% where I live... I'd have bought it in a no sales tax state.

Hey, I had to pay that sales tax on a car! Almost $1,700 in taxes ALONE! It was enough to look into buying a car in Oregon and driving it back down. NOPE, they would have still taxed me when I went to registrar it. Cali is ridiculous when it comes to taxes, but they are also very very broke.

Soon they may also be requiring CFIs to pay $3500 every three years in taxes just to be able to instruct. I love this state, but sometimes it can be a little frustrating living here.

I looked into moving there because the wife really likes it out there.... I'd be paying almost as much in state taxes as federal, that's BEFORE buying a car/house/etc. F CA. Tax the hell out of your residents but still too broke to provide basic social services?

How's that socialism working out for you guys?

I was once like you, just used my cheap phone to call, didnt like even texting cause of the t9 thing. Then the wife wanted one so I bought one for myself too.....now im hooked.....having so much information and entertainment at your finger tips is just incredible. I will say Apple never fails at delivering an easy to use quality product but it comes at a premium price. Then u get into the whole jail break thing and its lights out to all competing phones. I just replaced my 3G with the iphone4 thinking it couldnt be that much better...but it is. You just have to get one for yourself to see!

FWIW when I got my phone from Sprint a year ago American Airlines had a 25% discount on the monthly rates, and the Sprint store didnt ask for proof when I told them I work there
