I used to live in Plymouth. It's only a 20 minute drive to the airport. I rarely ever ran into any traffic on the freeway and it's a really nice, affordable, safe area with a picturesque suburban downtown.

There are a number of nice areas near DTW. I know, most people are shocked. Plymouth, as mentioned, is a nice area, Canton is close and also not bad. If your willing to go a little further there is Farmington Hills, Novi, and a few other areas that are a little pricer.
With the problems MI has had recently I'm assuming the prices have come down some. South of the DTW airport is cheaper, a little quieter, but also considered a little more boring.
As for things to do, there are a ton of lakes and all the activities associated with it. People also head up north for hunting and fishing.
You do have all the professional and college sports, Ann Arbor is close with Michigan. There are a number of parks nearby.
Public transportation basically doesn't exist, so plan on needing a car. Food and bars are plentiful in Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, Plymouth, etc. Just about any type you could want.

And very expensive. If you want to live the A2 lifestyle without the A2 real estate prices and taxes, consider Ann arbor's lowbrow sister city, Ypsilanti.

Plus tons of taxes. Look at Howell or Brighton. Brighton is 15 min north of Ann Arbor, Howell 10 min west of Brighton. I'm in Brighton Township and its 45 min from driveway to employee lot (without traffic or wx conditions).
