Default Duty Times -- Fatigue -- Aviation Safety

Hello.

I’m a reporter who needs some help. We're working on a series of stories about aviation safety, specifically fatigue. We have found data that supports the theory that FAR guidelines related to duty times and fatigue are out-dated and perhaps insufficient, but we haven’t heard a pilot perspective on this issue.

If you’re a pilot and have a perspective on this or any other safety-related issue, I’d love to hear it. Or, if you know a commercial pilot (current or former) who might be willing to talk, please feel free to forward my contact information. I understand any fear of reprisals for talking with a reporter, so I am willing to take precautions to protect identities, if necessary.

The stories we are working on are of a national scope and interest, and our best hope is that our work will positively effect aviation safety for all stakeholders involved.

The organization I work for is called News21, which is partnered with the Center for Public Integrity and is funded by the Carnegie-Knight Initiative. Our reporting will be picked up by national media outlets and is already generating interest from NPR, PBS, The Washington Post, and Rueters, among others. I can and will provide further details about our work when we speak personally.

Please contact me at:

Thanks and safe journeys.

Charlie, just do us all a big favor. Once you complete your research and write the article, give it to a couple of pilots for a good proofread. There's nothing worse than reading something that isn't true or has been sensationalized.

I agree, but with one caveat. From my perspective, I would much rather read the errors than be the hack that printed them.

If I have learned anything about the aviation industry in the last several weeks, it is this: Aviation is an incredibly complex industry, and anyone who claims to be an expert in these many complexities is either a genius or a liar.

So, I take your point. In fact, that's good advice for any reporter on any beat.

Charlie,

Are you a reporter doing a story or a grad student doing a thesis?

A quick search for News 21 and you would lead me to believe your a grad student. At least you were in Feb of this year.

No, there are many experts in the aviation biz but you wont find many that will go on TV to sensationalize a story. The ones on TV are usually in way above their heads.

UNL | News Release | UNL students selected for News21 Carnegie-Knight fellowships

What made you choose this topic?
How many articles will be produced eventually?
Are they part of a larger series or will they stand alone?
Are you working on this project yourself or will the Arizona students participate?
Are you and will you be the lead author?
Will your work be reviewed and critiqued by a professor or someone from Carnegie-Knight?
Will the identities of the pilots be kept confidential?
Will you be contacting airlines? The FAA?
Are you able to share with us the "innovative digital methods to distribute the news on multiple platforms?"

Note: I have a graduate degree from UNL so I have a particular interest in your work.

Charlie,

I'm locking the thread due to the uncertainty about your credential. Is your publisher so cheap that they make you use gmail? Use the contact us link below and you can send a message with links to your publisher and your online bio.

Thanks
