I was on reserve years ago, that accounted for a lot. But my military job entails a lot of computer time so I to wander over to APC as a procrastination mechanism

I have gotten all my aviation jobs w/out a degree. Yet another reason to stay away from 121 work.

I like to keep my options open, hence the pursuit of an education. It seems tedious at times (like right now) but I know it will only benefit me in the end. Many captains (read: wise men) have told me to get a degree now or regret not doing so in the future.

Well, I am 31 years old, and spent 9 years in my last "career." So, I have a backup plan. I think a backup plan should be more important than a degree. If it includes a degree, then so be it.

Yes, I would rather have a trade or marketable skill than an aviation degree, or maybe even a liberal arts degree.

A college degree in Aviation is utterly worthless and has nothing to do with flying an airplane.

If one's goal is to get to a major, your backup plan won't get you there. The degree will check the necessary box on the app when competing for a job. Most of the best jobs in aviation(corporate, airlines, military, etc) will only hire guys with degrees. You may not want it now, you may down the road. Why limit yourself? For the young guys out there, stop looking for shortcuts. You know what needs to be done, if you want it, get out there and do it.

It's really different strokes for different folks, I have no degree and I've been in my current job since before the earliest I could have graduated from college with 3 good backup plans, the best piece of advice on this subject I ever heard was a quote from Paul "Bear" Byant of the Crimson Tide...

"If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride and don't ever quit, you will be a winner."
What I mean by that being good advice is that regardless of the path you choose to get to your goal, you can achieve that goal if you are a capable and focused person, people with or without degrees getting hired into a position are not there because they are not capable, they are there because they are in fact very capable and have provided a way to demonstrate that to their new/prospective employer. Of course, knowing someone does help, it is still not the be all/end all.

I never really understood the American phenomenon of requiring a degree for flying an airplane. Does anyone know of anywhere else in the world where this is being practiced ?

I refer to mine as my "B.S. in BS"
