Best flying movie ever?

Kubrick talked about using the B-17 in the low level shots and more than once they were stopped and asked about what they were doing. A B-17 flying low level caused some concern.
FWIW, Sellers was supposed to also play the role of Major Kong but broke his leg. Reportedly Kubrick was at a loss as to who he would get to replace Sellers until Pickens walked in. Final point, someone mentioned Kong going through the survival kit. Pickens says something like a "...feller could have a good time in Dallas" which fit with his Texas character but only months before the movie came out JFK was assassinated. The voice over changed the town to "Las Vegas."
Still an amazing movie.

Alright, question. We've remade Transformers, Starsky and Hutch, GiJoe, A-Team, Dukes of Hazard and I'm sure some others.
And for all intents and purposes Star Trek is a remake using the same characters and Bond is remaking some of the original Bond movies and even Sherlock Holmes is a remake. All have wisely gone for character development vs. special effects and focused on plot quality and having broader audience appeal. In the case of my wife, she loved the new Star Trek, she has no idea what the name of the spaceship was but she liked it. My dad is a lifelong Trek fan, he loved it too.
In the case of Bond they went for more grit and realism so instead of starting out with a jump off a dam into a plane in a nose dive they started with Bond killing a man in the bathroom with his bare hands. Or better yet, how do you like your martini, shaken or stirred? "Does it look like I give a ----?"
So, what 1980s throw back has not been made yet? Airwolf. And if it were to be made, would it star Will Ferrel in the super sonic wonder chopper, some cheesy movie on par with that Apache helicopter movie or would it go for some major realism and grit with a top secret chopper as pure background?
Because personally, the best aviation movies are when the airplane is nothing more than a background setting.
or do you scrap the Bell 222/430 and go for...
Lord knows Bell-Boeing would love some good PR for that beast.
And what the heck would the plot be?

Island in the sky. Great movie, based on a true story, great cast. I have always been a huge Ernest Gann fan, so I am a little biased. It was mostly overshadowed by The High and the Mighty, which came out the following year, but I like think its better.
Battle of Britain is a great one as well, but you really can't go wrong with a pack of Spitfire's.
