Re: Earth Day
Here's what they say:
No DDT-related human fatalities or chronic illnesses have ever been recorded, even among the DDT-soaked workers in anti-malarial programs or among prisoners who were fed DDT as volunteer test subjects — let alone among the 600 million to 1 billion who lived in repeatedly-sprayed dwellings at the height of the substance's use. The only recorded cases of DDT poisoning were from massive accidental or suicidal ingestions, and even in these cases, it was probably the kerosene solvent rather than the DDT itself that caused illness. Reports of injury to birds could not be verified, even when one researcher force-fed DDT-laced worms to baby robins. Reports of fish kills have been greatly exaggerated, resulting from faulty data or aberrant, massive spills or overuse of the chemical that do not hint at a general danger in its use.
Wow. They also say that the National Academy of Science recommends the further
use of DDT, a claim so misleading as to be considered a lie by omission.
I noticed they don't mention the number of malaria deaths due to DDT resistant mosquitoes but I did find their corporate sponsors [from 1984 - they no longer publish this information] to include Dow, Dupont, Mosanto, Union Carbide and Uniroyal Chemical, petro chemical companies that, I'm guessing, manufacture DDT.
Your first malaria death number due to the ban on DDT was 3 billion. The second was 450 million, a difference of 85%. The American Council on Science and Health put the number at between 1 - 2 million a year for a total of between 30 to 60 million [another 86% to 94% difference] but as far as I'm concerned, they have no credibility on the subject.

OK. What came up at random was The American Council on Science and Health.
Here's what they say:
THE DDT BAN TURNS 30 — Millions Dead of Malaria Because of Ban, More Deaths Likely > Health Issues > ACSH

We have already established that you are happy with x number of malaria deaths to support the irational and illogical decision to ban ddt (not to mention bed bug outbreaks). I am ready, tell me what the right number is. So how many million of those poor and poverty stricken schmucks wiped out is OK as long as rachel carson legacy is maintained. Earth day May day whats the difference?

What I find disturbing time and again is that people are so willing to go with numbers that cannot possibly be correct ,what's the problem with getting all the information first and making absolutely sure that it is correct before releasing said information ?
It would help on the credibility level would it not ?

Re: Earth Day
Again, the ban on DDT was not worldwide but it is so Madison Avenue to see a conservative expressing his sincere concern about poverty in Africa by shilling for the petro-chemical industry.
By the way, the US ban on DDT is credited for saving the American bald eagle from extinction, among other birds, and malaria is only one quality-of-life issue for the poor. Climate change is going to be devastating to humanity but disproportionately to those already in poverty.

We have already established...? Maybe in your head.

Buttghanistan may have not banned ddt but it was an effective ban since the developed world did not fund or produce it. Your DDT claims on the effect on Bald Eagles has about as much science attached to it as a Cars 2 documentary on big oil.
"But by 1960 – 20 years after the Bald Eagle Protection Act and at the peak of DDT use – the Audubon Society reported counting 25 percent more eagles than in its pre-1941 census. U.S. Forest Service studies reported an increase in nesting bald eagle productivity from 51 in 1964 to 107 in 1970, according to the 1970 Annual Report on Bald Eagle Status"
Bald Eagle-DDT Myth Still Flying High - Opinion - FOXNews.com
For those of you who wait for Al Gore (or the much more life like, Mater) to explain their science let me translate. The Bald Eagle population started it comeback prior to an during the production of DDT. There were more Bald Eagles after DDT was produced then before it was produced; another inconvienent truth.

Re: Earth Day
Milloy has spent much of his life as a lobbyist for major corporations and trade organizations which have poisioning or polluting problems... He originally ran the National Environmental Policy Institute...NEPI was dedicated to transforming both the EPA and the FDA, and challenging the cost of Superfund toxic cleanups by these large corporations.
NEPI was also associated with the Air Quality Standards Coalition (AQSC) which was devoted to weakening Clean Air laws. This organization took up the cry of "we need sound science" from the chemical industry as a way to counter claims of pollution -- and Milloy became involved in what became known as the "sound-science" movement. Its most effective ploy was to label scientific findings that were detrimental to the large funding corporations as "junk."

Here's what the Auduban Society says about the American bald eagle:
RESURGENCE OF A NATIONAL ICON. Bald eagle populations declined dramatically in the last century, attributed mostly to the accumulation of the pesticide DDT in fish, a staple of the eagle's diet. The pesticides gradually poisoned females, causing them to produce thinly-shelled eggs that broke easily, preventing the embryos from growing. Years of hunting, accidental poisoning and habitat loss took an additional toll.
In 1960, Audubon took the lead in studying the eagle's declines through its' Continental Bald Eagle Project. The project revealed that DDT was in large part responsible for population declines among several raptor species including the bald eagle.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) in 1967 listed the bald eagle as endangered, a designation that gave the bird legal protection from harmful human activities and in 1972, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency banned most uses of DDT.

Steven Milloy is a hack and a lobbyist for large corporations including Monsanto, a manufacturer of DDT.

Were there more bald Eagles in 1940 or 1960? How come if DDT is their bane? The Bald Eagle population has soared in the last 70 years, doesnt that coincide with Al Gores Hockey Stick? I can only conclude that CO2 is good for Bald Eagles right?
