Sounds like Germany is abandoning one interim energy source for another in the interest of safety for its citizens. Hardly a scandal.

Meanwhile, closer to home:

Three U.S. senators have called for a congressional probe on safety issues at the nation’s aging nuclear plants following a pair of new exposés. In a special series called “Aging Nukes,” the Associated Press revealed that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the nuclear power industry have been working in tandem to weaken safety standards to keep aging reactors within the rules.

And yet more Germans died from Organic Beans Sprouts than Japanese died from Nuclear melt downs. Go figure. You alarmists are working wonders.

It's been only three months since the disaster at Fukushima began.

As you probably aware, it's will take years, perhaps decades, to correlate the number
of deaths/disabilities from birth defects and cancer.

Too bad we will never know the cost in lives and quality of life of the increased cost and decreased availabily of energy brought about by illogical, emotional decisions (or deliberate, logical decisions if you are a Marxist). We know that DDT elimination only cost about 3 billion lives but it did make you guys "feel" better. But I guess you algoreians arent to upset about 3 billion less energy consumers.

"We" don't know that.

In fact, the overuse of DDT has spawned DDT resistant mosquitos that has
exacerbated the original problem. In many parts of India, for example, DDT has
largely lost its effectiveness.

But I'd be interested in seeing the source of your "3 billion lives lost" claim:

You are right it is only about 1.5 million a year, times 30 years, 450 million. I guess the 3 billion number was a projection for total DDT deaths by the next end of the world global warming time limit expires.

I'll bet 450 million makes you "feel" much better about the illogical and emotional decision to ban DDT.

DDT was only banned in the US, not the entire planet. What is your source
for that number?

"Christian Parenti is a contributing editor at The Nation and a visiting scholar at the Center for Place, Culture and Politics, at the CUNY Grad Center. He has reported extensively from Afghanistan, Iraq and various parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. His work has appeared in Fortune, The Washington Post, The New York Times, London Review of Books, Mother Jones and Playboy.

The most recent of his three books is, The Freedom: Shadows and Hallucinations in Occupied Iraq. He has a PhD in sociology from the London School of Economics, has held fellowships from OSI, RBF and the Ford Foundation; and has won numerous awards, including the 2009 Lange-Tailor Prize and Best Magazine Writing 2008 from the Society for Professional Journalists. Currently, he is at work on a book about climate change and war.

Christian is available to speak on all the topics of his work; recent lectures have covered US foreign policy, Latin America, the war in Iraq; his current research focuses on Afghanistan."

Too bad his doctorate wasnt in climate change from East Anglia then I could really put some stock in his diatribe. Think Dr. Parenti has any economic interest in promoting Global Warming?

I can find hundreds of refrences for Malaria deaths and DDT bans that range from 1 million to 2.5 million a year. You cant?

You're right. I misspoke trying to relate the fact that the ban in the US did not constitute a worldwide ban, which always seems to be the implication when an exaggerated number like 3 billion casualties is used. I'm embarrassed to discover the
US wasn't even first which, by the way, would help to diffuse the anger toward Rachel Carson who the right always blames for the ban.

Criticisms of a "ban" on DDT often specifically reference the 1972 US ban (with the erroneous implication that this constituted a worldwide ban and prohibited use of DDT in vector control).

You may think DDT is the best way or the only way to eradicate malaria but the root
of the problem is poverty. The squalid living conditions of the places where malaria is
a threat are usually horrible. Poisoning everything including the people you're trying to protect is not a workable solution in my view.
