Cool video. Reminds me of a ferry flight I did from SFO to OAK in a 747-400, empty with only #20K of fuel onboard. I saw 8K fpm until we had to level at 2,000' Big jets can climb (when their empty!).

So would a light 777-200LR have the best thrust weight ratio of any transport jet today? It would have to be close, with about 220k of thrust available and I'm guessing a light take-off weight could be as low as around 400k lbs. Serious climb power.

Maybe a light 752 or 73NG would give it a run for its money.

It still amazes me what these huge jets can do.

Was that achieved just from trying to keep from overspeeding the landing gear or keep from busting 250kts? If so, it would be interesting to know how much faster you still could have climbed.

Back in the day there was a maint base in SFO and in OAK, if OAK needed the jet, flying it across the bay was the only way to get it there. We would only climb to about 2500' and there in a BIG hurry!

We'd retract the gear as normal, so that wasn't a problem. The speed limit is an issue, but mostly because we could
