Default Stability Augmentation System

Snowed in and bored I found this 1968 FAA video about the SAS. Thought it was interesting.

Altitude Hold and Roll Hold on low-end autopilots does the same thing, as long as the pitch and roll limits are not exceeded when it is engaged. Cirrus has an emergency wing leveler with attitude limits as well. They did not say whether the Stability Augmentation System can tell if it is in a graveyard spiral or whether it can recover from spins. That would be great if it could. The ballistic parachutes Cirrus and Cessna are installing these days are great for spin recovery, but they can't handle graveyard spirals very well because if the deployment speed limit is exceeded the chute will be ripped from the airframe. Also, a lot VMC into IMC accidents are not due to spatial disorientation, they are due to controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) so it would have to use a land database or onboard radar to do that. I hope none of those actors went on to Hollywood after making this movie.
