I do not think that children are obligated at all to their parents.

If your grandfather had been really considerate, he would have killed his autistic son (so he wouldn't be a burden to anybody) before committing suicide.

Skyhigh, you are a sad, sad man.

Default I appreciate everyones comments

I appreciate everyone's comments. My situation has been weighing heavily on my mind lately. It is apparent that I do not have the same relationship with my parents that many of you enjoy.

I realize that my opinions are not typical and perhaps that is why I feel the need to hear from others on the matter. It is no fun to watch your parents get older.

WOW! We must have very different experiences with parents. Personally, I can't wait for mine to die...at least they'll be less trouble then. I'll spare you the details, but suffice it to say I haven't had the best relationship with them in decades. Nothing would please me more than for them to come crawling to me in old age for help, only for me to remind them how much they treated me like garbage growing up and promptly slam the door in their faces. But since most people have better relationships with their parents than I do, I guess my advice is not applicable to most people on this forum.

Its less a matter of experience than culture. There are actually some cultures in this world where elders are venerated.
