787: Sexy Lines or Just Another Jellybean?
I miss the Ford Mustang's "overbite".
There was a time when a car's profile was based on sex appeal. Today, it's all about drag coefficient. Efficiency has yielded the "jellybean" car: a vehicle with no hard edges and no unique style (sorta like a 9mm bullet on wheels).
I'm sure the engineering that has gone into the Dreamliner is fantastic. But it looks so nondescript! Boeings post 747 lack character. Sure, some have 4 wheel bogies, others 6 wheels, but they have no unique features.
The 707 had four engines, greatly swept wings, and that spear pitot tube on the tail (early models). It was "the" jetliner.
The 727 had its nose thrust far forward of the three noise makers in the tail.
The 737-100 with its two cigars hung under the wings, was a short, chubby beast that reminded me of a pug.
The 747 another four holer with an enlarged cranium.
And then there were the round-nosers 75,76,77, and 787. Tubes with wings.
I know saving fuel is at the top of everyone's list. I just wish the new bird had something distinctive.
.... maybe they could have brought back the DC8's gills. (sigh)

The 75 has the good ol' long legs etc. etc. Still sexy
76 reminds me of the kid we used to pick on in high school.
777, also sexy, is like the female (or male if you're a lady) athlete/ scholar. It's proportioned just right, and good at what it does.
787 PLASTIC tube with wings.
DC-8= Brittney Spears circa 2003
