What do you like in a CA (or FO)?
Okay, so there is a "what do you hate" thread. I thought I would look for a little positive emotion for a change.
Certainly there are folks you fly with who have traits you wish ALL CA/FOs had. What are they?
For me.... A CA who:
Says "I'm ready when you are"
Acknowledges when I keep him/her out of trouble.... or at least doesnt give me an attitude
He respects when I say, slow down, I am overloaded (crappy wx, plane swap to a first flight of the day plane, rampers decide to board pax without asking any of us, new ATIS now requires a TO alt, and the destination's alt airport has a dozen approach procedure notams).
Respects when I say "NO". (Yeah, on this 25 minute flight, we are legal to go with 12 lbs of extra fuel, but the TAF calls for MVFR at our destination and alternate, there have already been 2 CAT III go missed and the METARS at the alternate are trending below mins.)
I still firmly believe the PIC, CA, guy signing for the plane, or whatever you call "the ol' man", is still the HMFIC. But a CA who insists on the flight being not only legal, but safe and prudent, gets high marks from me.
Thankfully, almost all the folks I fly with, do all of the above.

when I think about the best captains I've flown with, these are the qualities that stand out: knowledgeable yet humble, knows how to be pick battles (that is, know the difference between mentoring and flight instructing), are tactful when giving constructive criticism, assertive in the appropriate situations, thoughtful, mature and a bonus is if they're funny (but that is a personality trait, not so much a captain-ing quality that you can change or improve on).
