Default Does anyone here fly with one of these?

Another thread gave cause to wonder if anyone here still uses the device below. I would bet that some on here may not be sure what it is.

Used one years ago in a rental 172 or 182. Think I also used one in a KA C90 that I rode shotgun in once. I remember it was pretty neat that you could essentially create your own VORs.

Couldn't tell you how to use it anymore without being able to punch buttons on it for a couple minutes first.

Amazing how many devices we've all spent so much time to learn have come and gone!

There's one in the Twin Bo I fly. We use it as a glorified DME and always identify ourselves as slant-A. I can think of one - and precisely one - VOR/DME RNAV approach plate I've seen in the last eternity. The massive use of GPS = death to VOR/DME RNAV approaches.

It was the Garmin 430 of 1980.

Someone asked what kind of GPS was in the plane I used to fly several years ago. I told them it had none, but it did have two KNS 80 RNAVs. They had no idea what I was talking about.

Used the RNAVs in the air ambulances all the time, The company still uses them. Those were fun approaches.

If I recall, DUATS was able to generate the waypoints for direct on the flight planning page. ATC hated the flight plans because they got the waypoints defined by lat long positions.

Holy cow does that bring back memories!!!!!!! When I transitioned in to the twin cessnas years ago, we thought we had made the big time with KNS 80 equipped 310's and 414's flying checks around the midwest. Untill they put in the garmin 430's

I flew in a 210 that had one last week on the way to pick up a King Air. I had NO idea how it worked but I understand the basic principals. I was flying with the DO and we were talking about how a systemwide failure of GPS would change GA.

I used to use one of these routinely. They work great, but are not as user friendly when it comes to going to "plan b" when navigating. When ATC gives you some random off airway route, you have to plot fixes off of nearby VOR's from your charts so you can input a radial/distance from the VOR. The KNS-80 then "moves" the vor to the pseudo location so you fly standard vor indications to the new fix. Somebody posted about duats. That used to be great because it would give you a direct route with pre-planned rad/dist fixes you could input prior to flight.

Ah yes, the KNS 80...a great piece of avionics that time quickly passed by with the invention of GPS.

Amazingly, that piece of hardware does not exist in the 152 I train in, but the buttons, knobs, and lights look almost exactly the same to some of the other instruments in the cockpit.
