Default Wanted : Memories of W22 (Woodbridge Airport)

In 1985, My grandfather purchased my first flight lesson for me as a birthday present. He had seen that I had a thing for airplanes as a kid growing up. He wanted to see if it would morph into anything.

I have been reminising and found this link Abandoned & Little-Known Airfields: Virginia: Prince William & Stafford Counties. It brought back some memories.
I hope someone on here might remember some of this. My flight that day was in a plane tail number 6363B and the CFI was Don Yoxhiemer. We flew for 1.3 according to the reciept I have. I was 15 years old.

Somehow life got in the way and it was to be 19 years before I took another lesson, I still remember that flight like it was yesterday.

Does anyone remember this Airport (which is now Townhouses), or that CFI. thanks....

Yes, I remember Woodbridge very well. I learned to fly in 1978 at Leesburg Airport, then W09, also called Arthur Godfrey field. Took my private checkride with Lou Frederick of Frederick Airport, home of AOPA. Woodbridge was a great place to practice STOLs. Then, in the mid 80s, when I worked for a company that had four airplanes based at National, I'd fly over to Manassas and wash a couple of our planes behind the hangar after work on a summer evening. I'd fly back to National and land Rwy 15 over the Pentagon, or Rwy 3 and hold short Rwy 36 at Delta. Arriving from the east I'd fly down the Anacosta River during an approach. On Saturdays I could fly the river approach no questions asked and land over the park at the north end of the airport. Or how about this, fly right over Andrews AFB on the way to Maryland Eastern Shore. Or fly over to Tangier Island -- anyone remember the Falcon 50 ad showing an approach into Tangier? Have I mentioned that all of this could be done VFR with a simple clearance? God, how things have changed for the worse. Life was almost too perfect then -- which was only a little over 20 years ago.

No memories of the Woodbridge airfield, never went there, but a few memories from that area as I grew up in Northern Virginia.
-TPROP, I like your story of your Grandfather's birthday present of your first flight lesson. Something sort of similar for me. I'd flown with my Mom when I was a little kid on Piedmont 737's (I think) down to Tri-Cities to visit relatives a few times. Had never been in a small plane before my step-father took me and a friend over to College Park airfield for a little weekend fly-in airshow deal. He paid for us to go for a ride around the pattern in a 172, and sitting in the back seat, I thought "I'd like to do this".
-EYELS, Tangier Island. Wow, that brings back some memories too. The best date I ever went on was when I took my then girlfriend for a flight over there back about 15 years ago in a rented 152 from Mannassas. Super fun.

Also great memories of going to the "Flying Circus" in Bealeton, VA with my Mom, Stepfather, and sisters. Awesome times.

Anyway, my family is still in NoVA. One of my sisters cuts hair there- if you need a haircut let me know and I'll see if I can get you a discount!

Thanks for the memories.
