Re-read the article above this morning. Something caught my eye in the top picture this time- a self portrait of the 18 year old in question. I'm not sure, but is that an ELT by his head? I tried enlarging the picture but it got pretty grainy. I'm not good at photo editing. Seems to me if it is an ELT that's a pretty good clue that he might have stolen at least one of the three planes mentioned in the article.

I think you're right about it being a portable power device- looks like it says "Husky" on it. I think they sell some of that brand stuff at Home Depot.
Threw me off because of the orange color and was thinking maybe it was a new 406mhz ELT, I've not seen any of the new ones in person yet.
