Sailboat Question
#2
For blue water cruising I believe 35' and above is recommended. However, over 40' and it gets more difficult to sail single handed without setting it up for doing so($$). I would go for a 40-45 footer personally.

Anything Morris makes is a decent blue-water cruiser - given deep enough pockets, I'd go with this Morris 38 | Morris Yachts.

Fred,
Vessel length is irrelevant when evaluating offshore seaworthiness. Its not that simple. A larger vessel could actually be less seaworthy giving consideration to the crew's ability to handle the rig, displacement, hull design, construction method/quality/ etc. Many people have comfortably circumnavigated in sailboats less that 30ft.

All depends on what you want to do. If you are going to be single hand, you don't want a boat that is too big. I sail a 30 in blue water single, and it can be a hand full when the wind and waves are up. I plan to do a Pacific crossing the dana 24 seems about perfect. Bigger is not always better. Take a look at the single handed sailing society and what boats are used.
