UAL International Business Class Non-Rev'ing

The delta flight out of SFO is actually operated by NW (techinically Delta, I guess) on an A330 to NRT.
Have you been to Japan before? This will be my first trip there...I bought a JR Pass and have been pouring over the insanely detailed train system they have there, trying to figure out the best way to get to my hotel...then I discovered Hyperdia, which is a huge help.

I am listed for SFO-NRT and SFO-KIX, and both of those flights show biz and first wide open, though with Y class pretty much booked solid.

yeah, I saw that too, about the loads.... I'm not leaving for another month and a half and the coach class is already booked solid! As in, 192 out of 196 seats booked! That was quite surprising. I am just hoping that the first/business doesn't get booked solid as well since they are so expensive. although, on one of the flights I was looking at, business was already 2/3 full.
This is my first time as well but I will be with a native companion so I am lucky not to have to worry about the details. Just trying to learn some basic Japanese though so I don't look too stupid.

Slice, I would have to disagree with you here.. I wasn't even thinking of jumpseating when a friend actually suggested it.. he often jumpseats to Asia, and he told me that United has given him first several times. The flight crew of course, not the gate agent. So, I guess it all depends on how much they like you once you go up there.

and a delta employee recently told me that the new delta travel policy provides for automatic upgrades for nonrevs, no question asked (as long as there is seat available of course). does anyone know if this applies to jumpseaters as well?
