Default Tell Us

OK, I resisted looking at the "Lemmings: Do Not read" thread. But 1,053 could not help themselves---and 68 replied! I figured if I looked, either my computer would get some worm, or I'd be blocked from further posts. Or, I would just get taunted for looking.

So, one of you 1,053......tell us what it said!

I'm not a lemming, so I read it.

It's about the goofy idea to cut off lights for an hour ("Earth hour") as if that would somehow fix the supposed problem of global warming.

Now you can guess the entire content of the thread, and my take on it. Or you can waste a few minutes and read it for yourself. No harm will come to your computer, but your brain may be worse for the wear.

Instead, I turned on every light, TV, and electronic device in my house. For a while, I felt guilty, that perhaps I was hurting the environment more. That quickly passed as I realized it was March 28, 35*all day, and LIGHT SNOW over night with temps in the mid-20's. As soon as someone learns to control the sun, I will worry about global warming. Al Gore lied to me.

Default That's Funny!

Irony: Al Gore going to Oslo to accept his Nobel Prize, in a private jet.

I'm on the same page with you guys. I know that my use of carbon-fuels makes an impact on the planet. For that matter, so does our very existence.

But I liken it to this analogy: If I jumped into the ocean, did I make a splash? Yes. Did I really affect the height of the tide? Probably not.

That is the best way I have heard it put in a long long time. I like that.

What a ridiculously stupid thing to do. Do you often throw away money like that?

Even better is that Al Gore didn't even participate in the event. Gotta love it. Guess his advice only applies to the masses.

Al Gore ignores 'Earth Hour'

It's the principle of the matter. Besides, with electric ceiling heat (did hot air fall in the 60's?? I've never understood electric heating coils in ceilings....) and one window a/c unit for an 1800 sq. ft. house, our electric bills are insane anyway.

The part that Winged Wheeler was warning "lemmings" to not read was a website that invites people to look at this from a different perspective, that is from the perspective of human achievement. We're not stuck in caves scribbling pictograms on the wall, we're communicating virtually instantaneously with electrons across the globe. Rather than turn off the lights and stew in our guilt, the invitation is to celebrate how far we've come as the human race.

The website took a little while to load (for me), so let me copy some bits and pieces. Again, Winged Wheeler's admonition holds true. If you feel guilty about being personally responsible for destroying the earth, you probably should stop reading here.

Human Achievement Hour

UPDATED: Watch the original CEI video as well as videos from supporters, like Rep. Matt Wingard, celebrating Human Achievement Hour!

YouTube Video of Rep. Matt Wingard addressing the Oregon House of Representatives to recognize the upcoming celebration of Human Achievment Hour:

Rep. Matt Wingard Celebrates Upcoming "Human Achievement Hour" on March 28

(One of my favorite lines: "Coinciding with "Earth Hour," Human Achievement Hour's purpose is to salute the people who keep the lights on and produce the energy that helps make human achievement possible. Many organizations and average folks around the world will show their support for human achievement by simply going about their daily lives."
Another: "Earth Hour may be a viable alternative to Human Achievement Hour for some. Those who wish to celebrate Earth Hour can sit in the dark, turn off the heat, and breathe as little as possible, ..." )

YouTube video of Human Achievement Hour. (Similar to the first video, but this one has a different soundtrack.)

Human Achievement Hour 2009

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

The Competitive Enterprise Institute plans to recognize “Human Achievement Hour” between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on March 28, 2009 to coincide with Earth Hour, a period of time during which governments, individuals, and corporations have agreed to dim or shut off lights in an effort to draw attention to climate change. Anyone not foregoing the use of electricity in that hour is, by default, celebrating the achievements of human beings.

We salute the people who keep the lights on and produce the energy that helps make human achievement possible.

Green and private conservation are fine. We have no problem with an individual (or group) that wants to sit naked in the dark without heat, clothing, or light. Additionally, we would have no problem with the group holding a pro-green technology rally. That is their choice. But when this group stages a “global election” with the express purpose of influencing “government policies to take action against global warming,” we have every right as individuals to express our vote for the opposite.

If Human Achievement Hour is at all a dig against Earth Hour, it is so only by the fact that we are pointing out what Earth Hour truly is about: it isn’t pro-earth, it is anti-man and anti-innovation. So, on March 28th, CEI plans to continue “voting” for humanity by enjoying the fruits of man’s mind.

Check out these photos from supporters of HAH!

The most poignant point I gleaned from this little excursion is that Earth Hour is not pro-earth at all. It's anti-human.

I am not a lemming, I did not read that thread, and I did not turn off any lights during Earth Hour because I was watching one of our three Netflix selections, after which I ran a nice, hot bath for myself and soaked in it for quite some time before going back downstairs for a drink of my favorite beverage, Coke, before climbing into bed with the electric blanket turned up high since it was a rather cold night after all even by Seattle standards, and how do you all like this run on sentence?

Important point: All I know is that old F-18 guys make better lovers! So there!
