A friend just gave up on their front-loader, sold it on Craig's List. The unit could not withstand the sheer duty cycles required to keep up with three rambunctious kids (ages 2-6). They got their replacement, agitator-less, top load and are quite pleased as they can fit two of their normal loads in at once, and the clothes still come out clean.
We want to replace our current units in 3-5 years with frontloaders if we can afford the initial cash outlay. By my calculations, a frontloading HE washing machine will easily pay for itself in water and energy in a few years.

After running a few more loads last night, the hoses were dry and no evidence of a leak was apparent. I think the moisture on the hose I saw yesterday might have just be residual from it getting wet when I hooked it up. I'll have to watch it carefully to see if anything develops.
