'Victory at Sea'
All episodes of the historical, and historic, television show from the 1950's called 'Victory at Sea' are now online. If you've not seen it, and are on layover with a good internet connection, and are into WWII history- maybe check it out.
It's worth watching, and has a great music score too.

There was also a two hour movie, sold on VHS. I've never seen it on DVD.

I've watched the "Victory at Sea" series at least 3 times in its entirety. The same with "World At War".
As a youngster I read about some famous sea battles. My favorites are when HMS Hood ,Prince of Wales, and Ark Royal was tracking the the Bismarck, Prinz Eugen, and the Tirpitz --- what a battle ; the perils of Convoy PQ-17;
In the Pacific theatre there was the Battle of Leyte Gulf; Midway and Guadacanal.

The Victory at Sea series were recorded during WWII and shown at movie theatres to help with moral here in the states. Lowell Thomas was the primary commentator, his son Lowell Jr. was a long time Alaskan bush pilot and Lt. Governor of the state.
I remember as a kid in the 70's watching episodes on I think it was the PBS channel out of Anchorage. Proud to be an American!

You may be thinking of "Why We Fight" which was narrated by Walter Huston. While the scenes were filmed during WWII, "Victory at Sea" was produced by NBC to be shown on TV in the early 50's. Leonard Graves is the narrator.

My Dad watched the World at War series back in the 70's when it came out and I always watched it with him. It was highly impressive tv. I don't think kids today have very much emotional depth because the echoes of war are kept off television for the most part. If anything, they think war is fun. World at War was earthshaking as a documentary series- you can't see something like that on a daily basis and not be changed forever by it.
