Colonel Sanders statue found in Osaka 24 yrs after Hanshin Tigers win+
Mar 10 11:50 PM US/Eastern
OSAKA, March 11 (AP) - (Kyodo)—A statue of Kentucky Fried Chicken founder Colonel Sanders was recovered Tuesday and Wednesday from a river in Osaka, 24 years after frenzied Hanshin Tigers fans threw the statue into the river when the baseball team won the Central League championship.
Divers found the upper half of the life-sized statue of the U.S. founder of the fried chicken restaurant chain Tuesday and the lower half Wednesday from Dotombori River during a riverside construction work.
After the victory in 1985, exited Hanshin Tigers fans tossed the statue into the river because they thought it resembled Randy Bass, who was then the American slugger for the team.
As the team failed to achieve a league victory since the incident, some Hanshin Tigers fans attributed the team's poor performance to the statue's "curse."
