Commuting from US to Canada
Hey all,
My new job will involve commuting from LA to YVR 4 times a month.
Last week my wife and I flew into LAX for a couple days for apartment hunting. LAX was such a pain - so slow to get through customs etc.
Do the same procedures apply for flying out of LAX to YVR as they did for our flight arriving from and departing to Hong Kong. Example, catching an Alaska flight from LAX to YVR from the Alaska terminal. Are the customs procedures the same going to Canada or are they a little quicker and simpler?
Any info would be great,
O

Hi Oicur,
I've never flown on a jet commercially into or out of Canada, but many times in and out via personal vehicle above Skagway, Alaska Marine Highway into Prince Rupert, and Piper Cub, usually into Whitehorse and Prince Rupert. The scrutiny and procedures have changed a bit over the past few years, as you might imagine. There's been a bit of back and forth over what is, and will be required for U.S. citizens to enter Canada. I believe that now a passport or passport card are required. Have not done it myself in about a year, so don't know. I'm assuming you and your wife have passports though, as I believe that will be the way of the future for sure unfortunately.

U.S. / Canada Passport Requirement
Edit: Oicur the below link to the CANPASS data may not work for you. For some reason, when I try to link to it from this thread entry, I get a error message at Canadian Customs. Not sure why. Perhaps try googling "CANPASS" and see what you get. Things are in flux apparently. Good luck.
I've also heard of a deal called "CANPASS", in the context of entering Canada frequently- supposed idea was to streamline the process.
Here's a link to that, check info about CANPASS Air program, sounds promising. Perhaps there's someone out there who's used the CANPASS program who can chime in?

But for YVR-LAX you will be pre-cleared through US customs in YVR. There is a full US customs station there, you will be processed through before boarding your flight, and on arrival in LAX you are free to go about your business. I assume that YVR customs is less crowded than LAX inbound customs.
