Default NHL Winter Classic 2009

As a Wings fan and just a hockey fan in general, this is one of the best ideas that the NHL has come up with. Its great to watch on tv and just brings a feeling of "pond hockey" that those that grew up north played as a kid. Can only hope the NHL doesnt mess up this great marketing idea. Next year in New York at yankee stadium or in Boston at Fenway? or in Montreal or Toronto...

I'm pretty sure they did it last year in New York. I like the idea of it moving every year. I think a Canadian battle would be cool but probably wouldn't bring the ratings that two US teams do.

yea last year was in buffalo.... i guess this year was suppose to be at yankee stadium before it was torn down but i guess it fell through. I still think some great future ones would be say the bruins vs Rangers at fenway or the new yankee stadium, Flyers vs caps in philly, or say a game at the new twins stadium in minneapolis (Wild vs Stars), or Avs vs sharks at Mile high or coors field.. There is something about the Winter Classic that its reg season game that counts between rivals and the fact that it brings the game back to its roots that makes it fun.

The Winter Classic is definitely a great marketing idea, and it got me, a slowly self-educating hockey fan, to start watching more hockey, NHL, college, and high school hockey, more often. Although, I'm interested to see whether it has worked on a larger scale. I just have a feeling that it will get people to watch a hockey game once, then not watch any more the rest of the year.

What if they were to play an actual pond/lake game, "Mystery Alaska" style? I'd buy tickets to go see the Wild play the Stars out on Lake Minnetonka. Besides they'd have better seats than any baseball or football stadium could have for watching hockey.

I remember as a kid growing up in Montreal, I would play after supper just aboot every night at the park until the lights went aout, no matter how friggin cold it was. if it snowed, you just got the driveway plow out and pushed the snow over to the boards.
Old time hockey fo-shizzle.
