For an interview you'd be right, but for a pilot the grooming standards are way down the list below things like "Maintain thy airspeed, lest the ground rise up and smite thee" and monitoring your angle of arrival.

"metro sexual" is code for "Riddle graduate". They are recognized in the terminal by the hair gel, backpack and iPod.

I guess I have been lucky so far then. On Christmas Eve I spent 4 hours in Terminal 3 at Houston and saw numerous CAL pilots pass by while I sat people watching. Although there was one pilot on the tram who I wanted to ask how old he was (I didn't), I didn't see one single pilot who didn't look every part of the professional.

However I will tend to agree that the greater majority there goes for the metro appearance.

they say shinney shoes polished flying?i don't really think it s true;but it translates as ;if you dont bother with appearance, do you cross the t 's dot the i 's in your flying.
it's a service industry and the customer is more at ease with people who look smart and capable, more so it is a dissaplined proffession in the name of saftey ;so,tow the line do the job get prommoted;where your piercings on days off.retire early and go back to GA AND SURF EARLY.

Have you ever had a job that was truly a "service industry"?

I have, being an airline pilot doesn't even compare.

Bald, military style moustache, and no beard. That's me. Can't go wrong!!!

Besides, you gotta keep that "young boy look".
