The Career Span Of A Pilot (story)
#61
Standardization
I am a huge fan of standardization. How else are two strangers supposed to join in concert to fly a plane? A clear understanding of each others actions and reactions is required in order to insure a high degree of safety and efficiency.
The down side is that it is highly boring, lacks a creative outlet and generally is unsatisfying when compared to other forms of flying. The best that a pilot can do is to become as standard as they can and to strive to internalize the procedures and creation of others.
The result is a factory approach to manufacturing take-offs, emergencies and landings. Anything that lies outside of the flowcharts or manuals requires a consult with others for guidance.

Real Estate
Ouch. Fire for effect, all targets destroyed. Don't forget that Military pilots are the worst of all possible sociopaths.
Wonder how that real estate mogul/handyman thing is working out?

Happy Holidays to all.

Nice summary
Sky,
Your insults to airline pilots and their profession are repetitive and unpersuasive. Not everyone agrees that:
--Airliners should be flown like Alaskan bush planes.
--Improved technology degrades pilot skills.
--It is degrading to work as a First Officer.
--An "upper middle-class" lifestyle is necessary for happiness.
--Pilots are infantile, irresponsible, sociopathic, or neglectful of their families.
--Only jobs with "worthy compensation" in dollars are "real".
You made the right decision for yourself; now let others do the same in peace, unless you have some new information to offer.
Merry Christmas.

Upset
I don't write this stuff to upset anyone. These are my honest opinions of the matter. Plenty of others on this web site share my views but think that they are alone. Aviation is held high by its supporters in neglect of the down side. I believe in what I write and am striving to help others who might be struggling with many of the issues that I bring up.
I wish that 20 years ago someone would have come along and given me 30 minutes of an honest harsh reality check. All I remember being encountered with are people who were trying to sell me on a false dream.

I think, Sky, that many simply disagree with your views on the profession and what it means to be a pro-pilot. You want us to think you're some sort of APC martyr trying to save us from ourselves.
Personally, I just think you're wrong most of the time and the things you say here give you little credibility. I think it's great you share your story of what the career did to you but you seem to think we are all walking down that same path. We aren't, and even all of those starting out today won't.
Success in the career means different things to different people. To each his own.

You do sound like a broken record and those who oppose your views sound like broken records for the same reason.
Those that wish can look back and see both sides of the story and I'll say again that the difference is that the "flag waivers" (as you once called anyone excited about the industry) don't look down on those that got out of the industry. Who are you to call anyone "irresposible" or determine for others what is or is not a real job?

Just the fact that you even say that those bulletized statements will be kept for future reference just shows that you don't care about the people that you are bad mouthing. I'm glad that there are others on the forum who take a stand against you and your views. I'm happy for the readers/users to read each views and decide which side of the fence they want to come down on.
Simple put....you have quite the nerve.

My position
I present my side of the discussion. My interpretations and understanding of the industry that I've experienced. There are plenty here who oppose my views and that is great. I believe that my perspective is rare here on APC however by no means do I think that I am alone.
I write direct and honest statements. This is a forum after all, a place to share ideas and to exchange in a healthy debate. I am passionate about aviation and have made it a major focus of my life. After nearly 30 years of research in an attempt to understand the underlying truths and consistencies I have discovered and experienced some lessor attractive things and feel is important to share.
I can understand that many here may not understand what I am writing about and probably have enjoyed the other side of the aviation experience and that is great. I do in fact care about people. If my statements cause some hurt feelings I am sorry. I just do not feel that I am doing anyone any favors by sugar coating it.

It's cool Sky. Thanks for your opinions. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas, and the New Year brings better luck to the real estate market.
Now, for the really important stuff- Do you have any photos of your time in Alaska you can share?
